Etesia provides quality for landscape contractor

Sherratt Landscape Contractors, a commercial grounds maintenance company based in Flintshire Wales, has recently invested in a fleet of new Etesia pedestrian and ride-on mowers to ensure that the high quality the company is renowned for is maintained.

Craig Stockton, Managing Director at Sherratt, comments: “We had used other brands before but always had problems with reliability. I spoke with Jonathan from Morris’s Stores, our local dealer, and he recommended looking at Etesia. We had a demo and since the change-over to Etesia it’s really worked for us.”

Craig decided to change their fleet of pedestrian mowers to the PRO 46 and PRO 51 and ride-on mowers to the Hydro 80 which have been continuously at work on 80 gardens in North Wales each and every day for the past five years, with nothing but regular servicing ever required.

Designed to meet the rigours of a wide variety of comm have a 5hp Briggs and Stratton engine. Cutting width is 46cm, the detachable grass box with ‘full’ indicator has a capacity of 52 litres, and overall weight is just 37kg.

Designed around the operator, the handlebars are ergonomically shaped and mounted for ease-of-use. New ‘soft-touch’ controls reduce pressure on the hands and fingers during operation.

Extensive testing of these latest models has shown low vibration levels that meet stringent Health and Safety guidelines. There are six models available in the range, with options including a mulching facility.

The compact Hydro 80 ride-on mower is ideal for multi-tasking and easily adapts to every terrain, every grass cutting situation and every task.

The pocket-size cut and collect mower, at just 0.82 m wide and 1.98 m long, features an incredibly tight turning circle and is able to nip into every nook and cranny as well as being able to be easily transported in the back of a van or on the back of a trailer.

“After using Etesia for the past five years, we now know the life cycle of a machine. If we are tendering for a three year maintenance contract, we know that the Etesia mower will last.

“The PRO46 and PRO 51 mowers are bullet proof but also light weight which enables one-man grass cutting teams to operate. Manoeuvrability of the Hydro 80 is fantastic. The fact that they can fit through gates whilst cutting and collecting even in the wet is by far its best feature,” said Craig.

Etesia UK Dealers Visit Pellenc Factory in France

Ten Etesia UK dealers have recently visited Pellenc’s state-of-the-art facilities in Pertuis, France to reward them as the ten best performing dealers for the range of environmentally friendly battery-powered equipment.

After arriving in Marseilles, the delegates were driven to Pertuis and given a presentation of the company and told how Etesia and Pellenc had come to work together before they set off on a tour of the impressive R&D department, which has seen over 850 patents registered. Next up was a tour of the factory including production, assembly line and distribution centre which totalled 135,000 work hours in 2013.
The second day gave everyone the chance to test out the equipment before departing for a boat trip seeing some of the country’s coastal sights.

Pellenc’s zero emission concept offers a full range of truly professional handheld power tools are powerful, silent and emission-free thanks to the lithium-ion technology and ‘brushless’ electric motors which are patented to the company.

These environmentally-friendly tools are now offered with a three year commercial warranty as standard – the first manufacturer to offer this.

Employing 1,150 people, Pellenc has 15 subsidiaries in France and further afield with a presence in 50 countries. 800 distributors take care of over 50,000 customers worldwide. In the UK, Pellenc tools can be seen in every major city, as well as the majority of national trust sites around the country.

Chris Harris of Surrey Power said: “It was very interesting and surprising too – I never realised just how big the Pellenc operation was.”

Richard Taylor of RT Machinery also commented: “I was amazed at the sheer scale of the operation – from the R&D department, which invests a considerable amount of profit back into the development of new products, to the assembly line. The agricultural equipment was also very impressive.”

Etesia UK general manager Les Malin said: “We are very proud of our relationship with Pellenc and have gained recognition with local authorities, landscapers, contractors as well as groundsmen and greenkeepers who are now looking at environmentally-friendly products. To be able to show our dealers just how much effort goes into manufacturing this equipment, and to get their feedback, is invaluable.”

Landscape Contractor Chooses Pellenc for Quiet Garden Maintenance

Alaster Anderson Specialist Gardeners, a London-focused soft landscaping and garden maintenance company, has purchased a range of environmentally friendly battery-powered Pellenc products.

The purchase includes two grass strimmers, two hedge trimmers, two blowers, long reach hedge cutter and chainsaw – all powered by four ultra-lithium batteries, which provide a constant power, giving the contractor up to a full day of work depending on the type of tool used.

Senior Horticulturalist Natalie Nixon first heard of Pellenc three years ago whilst working at RHS Wisley, where the products are also extensively used. “I was very impressed with the Pellenc products I had used at Wisley, so when I joined here, it was only natural I recommended them when a customer said he wanted to use ‘green’ maintenance equipment where ever possible.”

Natalie’s priority is a six acre private garden in North London where she spends 3-4 days each week, which was designed by Christopher Bradley-Hole and is based on the concept of field patterns. “We have a lot of grasses, perennials and hedging made up of maple, beach and hornbeam which all require a lot of on-going maintenance.”

Hedging can take anything up to six weeks of the year, which is generally at the end of July and the beginning of August. “What I find really good when we have to cut the hedging is how quiet all the machinery is. I know our client doesn’t like to hear the noise of petrol-powered tools, so using the Pellenc equipment ensures it’s so much quieter not just for the client and neighbours but also for us as the users as well It means that we no longer have to use ear defenders which can sometimes be restrictive.”

Natalie particularly likes the four-speed selector on the Helion hedge cutter, Excelion grass strimmer and Airion blower: “I like the fact that you are able to work at variable speeds, which are really easy to adjust to the correct working speed, rather than just on or off. For what we do here, this technology is perfect as you have a lot of control and get a really good finish.”

In the last five years, Pellenc has gained market recognition by offering a unique range of ‘zero emission’ battery-powered handheld tools, thanks to the development of Lithium-ion ultra-high performance batteries. This technology, which is exclusive to Pellenc, allows for a drastic reduction in the production of greenhouse gases and noise pollution. It is also comfortable for users, meets new sustainable development demands and offers excellent economic profitability.

Another benefit that Natalie likes is that the battery pack is harnessed to the users back, which she explains makes the machines simpler to use and easy to handle.

“With the amount of adjustments that can be made on the harness, the machines are ideal for quality work. I used to struggle with petrol hedge cutters and that can really affect the quality of the cut. I found that I was getting tired by the end of the day and began to drop the blade, but it’s now a distant memory since we’ve switched to Pellenc.

Pellenc is exclusively distributed in the UK by Etesia UK.

Sssh, There’s a Pellenc About

The clearance of leaf fall and general maintenance is no longer a problem to Oliver Deeming, Grounds Maintenance Manager at the University of East Anglia (UEA), one of the world’s leading universities, thanks to the purchase of two Pellenc Airion battery-powered blowers and a Helion hedgecutter.

Located in 362 acres of rolling parkland but just two miles from the cathedral city of Norwich, the university has hundreds of trees with oak and birch the principal offenders in terms of leaf shedding.

For weeks on end Oliver and his team have the daily task of seeing that the mixed range of environments including housing blocks, classrooms, gardens, sports pitches, meadows and ancient woodlands which surrounds the university are safe from fallen hazards and always look in tip-top order.

Oliver’s dilemma had always been keeping a balance between maintaining the universities grounds and minimising disruptive noise. Previously, his petrol-engine leaf blowers and hedgecutters needed air defenders for the operative, so the lecturers did not welcome maintenance work throughout academic hours albeit necessary. Eighteen months ago he was introduced to Pellenc Lithium-ion battery-powered equipment by his local machinery dealer Felthorpe Mowers of Norwich and since then he hasn’t looked back.

“At first and because of past experience with electric equipment, I was a little sceptical about whether such quiet machines would actually have the power to do the job we wanted them to do,” said Oliver. “I didn’t want us to go back to hand equipment, so we took the Pellenc equipment on a two-day trial. I don’t mind admitting that I have been proved wrong. In fact, I would actually say it’s even more powerful than a conventional petrol blower of the same size.

“We use the blower for a full day’s work around the buildings with the added bonus of low vibration and low noise. They are also easy to carry, and having a multi-purpose power source in the battery back-pack is a real asset, allowing us to switch tools such as the hedgecutter from job to job.

The University has long been a leader in the field of environmental research and training and is committed to replicating this success in how they care for their campus and its surrounding environment.

“I wanted the university to be a leader in low carbon, low noise, low impact machinery and Pellenc has certainly helped me achieve this. I will be looking to replace all our petrol equipment with Pellenc battery-powered equipment where possible.

“People need to get over pre-conceived ideas that they have about past electric equipment and need to test this equipment for themselves – it’s brilliant.”

Safety first for Aberdour Castle

Health & Safety is a serious matter and has become a key issue for many involved in grounds maintenance. It certainly played a major role in the decision making process which led Historic Scotland, an executive agency of the Scottish Government, to work with Etesia as one of their mowing partners for the up-keep of the agency’s large number of grass areas around their conservation sites.

The latest Etesia Bahia MHHE ride-on purchased from local dealer, Angus Chain Saws, is to be used to keep grassed areas in pristine condition all-year-round for visitors to Aberdour Castle in Fife.

Dating back to the 12th century, Aberdour Castle is Scotland’s oldest standing stone castle and as well as attracting over 13 thousand visitors each year, the castle is also a wedding ceremony venue. A high level of round the calendar upkeep is essential with Angus Cook, Head Gardener at the site, ensuring the 16th and 17th century walled garden and terraces which overlook the Forth are in top order at all times.

Previously, grass cutting had been carried out by a pedestrian mower, and when it came to replacing this, an extensive search was carried out by Scott MacFarlane, National Planning and Resources Manager for Historic Scotland. After looking at what machines there were on the market, it was felt the Etesia Bahia offered everything the Gardens needed for grass maintenance as well as being narrow enough to drive through narrow gates and be stored in a secure shed at the castle.

“We are looking at best practice working policies and which plant equipment to buy which is suitable for gardeners to use without risk of HAVS and other health and safety related issues,” said Scott. “We are constantly looking at improving the working conditions of our staff and now have a central procurement policy to purchase equipment from an approved list in place with service from the supplier, vibration levels of the equipment and reliability of great importance.

“Etesia’s mowers have many safety features which come as standard. We have worked with Etesia before on different sites, so we know their machines and their performance.

The compact ride-on mower is ideal for multi-tasking and easily adapts to every terrain, every grass cutting situation and every task. The pocket-size cut and collect mower, at just 0.82 m wide and 1.98 m long, features an incredibly tight turning circle and is able to nip into every nook and cranny as well as being able to be easily transported in the back of a van or on the back of a trailer.

“In normal working conditions we cut the grass in the gardens and on the terraces once a week,” said Angus. “Compared to our old walk-behind mower, I’ve managed to half the time it takes to cut and collect which leaves me time to carry out other tasks.

“The Bahia is small enough to go through tight openings and gates and is extremely good in tight spaces which were previously inaccessible. I’m now able to cut the grounds before the castle opens to visitors so that it’s presentable as they stroll around.”

Etesia UK Appoints Three New Dealerships

Etesia UK is pleased to announce the appointment of three new dealerships, covering Norfolk & Suffolk, North Oxfordshire & Warwickshire borders and Worcester & Hereford.

Ron Smith and Company, with depots in Worcester and Hereford is a family run business with over 40 years of experience and has grown to become one of the largest garden machinery retailers in the UK. The company will be responsible for both Etesia and Pellenc products within their allocated areas.

“We needed a high quality, commercial range of mowers to add to our existing product range,” said Mark Smith, Director at Ron Smith and Company. “There is a definite trend at the moment with our customers wanting better equipment, which while the initial investment may be larger, the overall lifetime cost is low due to better reliability and fewer breakdowns. We’ve also seen a large amount of customers looking at environmentally friendly options and the Pellenc products sit perfectly with what people are wanting.”

New Norfolk and Suffolk dealer for both Etesia and Pellenc products is Bartram Mowers. Operating from two sites, one in Norwich and one in Ipswich, both sites have showrooms, spare parts departments, and fully equipped workshops, which also have service vans that carry out on site repairs ensuring that all customers can rely on Bartram Mowers’ excellent customer support. The service team has an in-depth experience of maintaining both domestic and commercial machinery and regularly attend manufacturer’s courses to keep up to date with new machinery. The company was awarded the Royal Warrant in 1978 for supplying machinery to Sandringham and has held it ever since.

“Etesia Products have such a good reputation for being able to do exactly what you say they can do,” said Adrian Kersey, Bartram Mower’s Branch Manager. “They are probably the best professional mowers on the market at being able to cut and collect in one pass and we see them being sold to our vast range of customers including local authorities, landscape contractors, schools and colleges.

“Pellenc is something new to us, but we are very excited to be able to show our customers a revolutionary and environmentally friendly range of products. We’re looking to expand our customer base and Pellenc sits perfectly with this.”

Finally, New Etesia and Pellenc dealer for North Oxfordshire and Warwickshire borders is FN Pile and sons. Recognised as one of the leading suppliers of garden and grounds care machinery in the area, FN Pile is known for the high levels of pre- and after-sales support it provides to customers of both new and pre-owned machinery. This support includes expert purchase advice and assistance and comprehensive service and repair facilities.

“We have been selling the usual brands of garden machinery for some time and decided to move into something more professional, for our more demanding customers,” said Managing Director Frank Pile. “After a lot of looking around we found the answer was on our doorstep, just 3 miles away. The people at Etesia were helpful and gave us guidance as to what we were looking for, so as to satisfy our customer’s needs. We were looking for a ride-on mower with a diesel engine with a good build quality, strong, reliable and have good back up. The main selling point with Pellenc machines is the way in which they appeal to the commercial customer who is becoming concerned at the rocketing price of petrol and the hassle involved in purchasing and storing petrol in cans.  Etesia and Pellenc ticked all the right boxes for us.”

Les Malin, Etesia UK General Manager, said: “I am delighted to welcome the three new dealers into our network. All companies have a wealth of experience in the groundscare industry and will maintain the standards of excellence that our customers expect.”

The Hunt is Over

Earlier this year, Etesia ran a competition titled ‘The Hunt is on’. The aim was to find the oldest working Hydro 100 ride-on mower from across Europe.

After receiving hundreds of entries from users still using their respective machines, it came down to two entries which were determined by only two months. The winner, Iain Hart of Lincolnshire was still using his H100 which was first registered in 1990 until the day before he exchanged it for a brand new Hydro 100 Evolution, worth over £8,500.

Iain’s machine, which has nearly 2,500 hours on the clock, has been in his family since new, with his father-in-law originally purchasing the mower back in 1990 from their local Etesia dealer at the time, Chandlers (Farm Equipment). The new Hydro 100 model was presented to Iain and his family at new Etesia dealer Charles H. Hill, Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire.

“The mower has been in our family since new with my father-in-law purchasing an ex-demonstration model,” said Iain. “I saw the competition details in a trade publication and had a chat with my father-in-law to see how old he thought it was. The mower was still doing a fantastic job and was easy to use, so I was surprised just how old it was at first.

“Etesia manufacture very reliable and long lasting equipment suitable for large domestic users or full time contractors like me. The mower has made mowing long, wet grass possible because of the way it collect and does not block.”

The fact that the mower is still working just as good now as it did over twenty years ago is a credit to the excellent service that Iain has received from his Etesia dealer. “I’ve dealt with Charles Hill for a number of years and their staff are all very knowledgeable with a well stocked parts department.”

The new Hydro 100 Evolution has a unique concept that cuts and collects grass in all weathers, even the pouring rain. Top quality manufacturing allows mowing, season after season, ensuring that this machine out-performs all other ride-on mowers in its class. A more powerful engine, large capacity 500 litre grass collector which is emptied without leaving the driver’s seat and more operator comfort sees the Hydro 100 Evolution really setting the standard for all ride-on mowers.

“The competition and level of the entrants really surprised us,” said Les Malin, Etesia UK’s General Manager. “Our network of dealers scoured the country and beyond to find the oldest working machine and when we found Iain’s mower, we were pleasantly surprised in what good condition it was in.

“This competition has made us look at and appreciate the mowers we design and manufacture. When people see how long that they have lasted, they will realise what we tell them is true. Our build quality is far superior and that is why we tell customers to examine entire life-time costs and not just the new price when looking to purchase any new product.”

Iain’s old machine will now take pride of place in the reception area of Etesia UK’s head office in Shenington, Oxfordshire.
